Protecting Your Online Bank Accounts

Written by MichaelZ on January 1, 2010 – 9:10 am -

Over the years, banking has been simplified to a large extent. You can pay your bills and transfer money to your loved ones in the comfort of your home. This is possible when you have online bank accounts. However it is very important that you do not give out your password to anyone. This is because anyone that has your password can make use of your money online.

Based on the fact that your online bank account password can be used to steal your money, you should not use an obvious password like your daughter’s name or your hubby’s nickname as your password. You should use a password that cannot be linked to you in anyway and that is very difficult to guess. This way it will be difficult for any one to get your password.

Also, you should make your password with a combination of numbers, letters and symbols. Another very good method of getting password is by getting random letters, numbers and symbols. Some very good examples are passwords such as cghjut4512%$#, ytfcxza^(8900). You will agree with me that this password will be difficult to figure out as compared to a password like Barbara2009 or joan123456.

Another important factor is the security of the network through which you are accessing your online bank accounts. For example, the security of a hotel’s network is insecure compared to your home’s security. For a hotel, a staff or employee may be able to obtain your password through the network and thus proceed to steal your money. You are, therefore, strongly advised not to access your account on a network such as a hotel or any other organization.

Usually, scammers and fraudsters will email you posing as your bankers or financial institutions stating that you should change your password or send some important information. Do not respond by clicking any links or completing any online forms. Your bank will not email you requesting for confidential information like your password. They would rather request for such information when you physically go to the bank yourself.  It will make a lot of sense if you could call your bank immediately to make any clarifications especially if you are too busy to go there yourself.

Most banks have very good anti-hacking technology and in the event that your money is stolen they have good financial policies that can assist you. Nevertheless, you are advised to read your application very thoroughly so that you know what you are doing.
